MERX, CanadaBuys, and Provincial Portals: What Each One Is For
Canadian suppliers still ask which site is “the” government tender site. There is not one. Federal, provincial, and many municipal buyers use different systems. MERX is a commercial aggregator many teams grew up with. CanadaBuys is the federal official board. Provinces run their own. Understanding the split stops you from searching the wrong place — or thinking one login covers the country.
CanadaBuys — federal official
CanadaBuys is the Government of Canada’s solicitation portal (SAP Ariba). Register through SAP Business Network, download federal packages, and submit federal bids there. It does not replace Ontario Tenders, BC Bid, Alberta Purchasing Connection, or SEAO.
Provincial boards — where most regional work lives
| Portal | Typically covers |
|---|---|
| Ontario Tenders | Ontario ministry and many OPS / broader public-sector notices |
| BC Bid | British Columbia public-sector solicitations |
| Alberta Purchasing Connection | Alberta provincial opportunities |
| SEAO | Quebec electronic tenders and many MASH notices |
| Other provincial/territorial boards | SaskTenders, NBON, PEI, NS, Nunavut, and more |
MERX — commercial aggregation, not a government of Canada portal
MERX aggregates and redistributes opportunity information for a fee. It can be useful as a discovery habit, especially for teams that historically lived there. It is not the submission system for CanadaBuys federal bids, and it is not a substitute for reading the official notice on the issuing board. Always verify the source link and submit where the solicitation says to submit.
How Sidona fits without replacing official sites
Sidona indexes official sources into one workspace, matches notices to your company, and helps you read PDFs. You still bid on CanadaBuys, provincial portals, or SAM.gov. Think of MERX-era “one inbox” goals — with official-source indexing and document intelligence — not another place that pretends to file your bid.
- Use CanadaBuys for federal registration and submission
- Use the provincial board named in the notice for provincial work
- Treat aggregators as discovery aids; confirm on the official page
- Use one feed + matching if you sell across more than one board
Bottom line
MERX is not CanadaBuys. CanadaBuys is not Ontario Tenders. Cover the official boards that match where you sell — and keep submission on those sites.
Never search twenty procurement sites manually again.
Sidona searches official government tenders across CanadaBuys, provincial boards, and US sources — then reads the RFP with you.
Official sources only
Every tender notice links back to the government portal it came from.
